Formulating our product range was one of the longest waits in my life. It also came with many questions. One major one was - How do we prove how effective it is?
We decided, our best bet was to send our products to be dermatologist and laboratory tested. We felt, there was no better way to be sure than to have a professional, qualified person test our products with a sizable group of people. Anyway, my kids had been eczema free for almost 2 years, I no longer had test subjects in our house.
Then, one night, we were awoken by the cry of our elder daughter. She was screaming no, no, no. When we tried to calm her, we noticed she was scratching herself. I massaged her to soothe her and put her back to sleep. That night, this happened at least 5 times. We thought the itching was from mosquito bites since among the 5 of us, she's always the one with the most bites.
She woke up early the next morning as she couldn't sleep well. When I took her to freshen up and change her pajamas, I was shocked. Her whole back and hands were red. No wonder she had been scratching the whole night and didn't get much sleep!
Unsure what caused it, I brought her to the Paediatrician as soon as the clinic opened. By then, my daughter was scratching non stop and had started crying. After all she had been scratching for more than 12 hours, and her skin had became sore to touch. Given the severity of the itch, the Paediatrician told me that anti histamines and steroids would be necessary. If you've followed my story, I've had a very bad experience with steroids. Read about it here. I was really worried and very reluctant to give them to her.
On the drive home, I planned my course of action. I didn't want to put her on steroids, but if she kept scratching and it got worse (eg. started bleeding), I knew it would be a long journey. I had to do something quick to keep it at bay.
This is what I did once we were home:
- Gave her anti-histamines, 3 times a day.
- Soaked her in Bare Calming Oats Soak in room temperature water. I chose not to soak in hot water as it strips off natural moisturisers and triggers inflammation. I then gently rubbed the affected areas with the oats soak bag. It was very calming and comforting for her. I did this 2 times a day. This no-rinse formula formed a protective layer on her skin.
- I then applied Bare Balancing Baby Lotion within 3 minutes after her bath. I let it set in for about 30 seconds. Having a good microbiome balancing moisturiser is important as the probiotics help colonise the skin with good bacteria. I did this every 4 hours to keep her skin moisturised.
- Next, i applied a thin layer of Bare Barrier Baby Balm. As dry skin is one of the triggers for scratching, a good barrier to prevent skin dehydration and also lock in the moisturiser I applied in the previous step was essential. I did this every 4 hourly to keep her skin moisturised.
However, my heart sank after 12 hours. My course of action above didn't seem to make much of a difference. I have to admit that seeing my daughter cry and continue scratching made me want to give up. I told my Mummy circle of friends that i wanted to give her the steroids. One of them, a very experienced mum with a kid who had experienced Topical Steroid Withdrawal reminded me that as she is not on steroids, the results would not be seen immediately. I had to be patient and wait to see the results, it may even take a week. Although I was relieved to have such a reminder, but the last 12 hours for a Mum, had already felt like foreverrrrrrr.
I tried many ways to distract her. I ended up giving in to Youtube, she seemed to scratch less while watching, anything to stop the scratching! If you read my post here, scratching is one of the main contributors to worsening eczema conditions.
At 48 hours, to my relief, her redness was gone and it was much much more bearable for her. Mostly dry patches left at this point.
With the dry patches, I knew one of the very important things to continue to do was to moisturise and put on layer of protective balm. I stopped using the Bare Calming Soak Oats since the redness had stopped. I still religiously moisturised her with Bare Balancing Baby Lotion and put on Bare Barrier Baby Balm twice daily.
After 7 days, she had silky smooth skin! I am sure all Parents would understand the stress of seeing your child in such discomfort. I was really really overjoyed when I saw how well our products worked on her.
Somehow God had an interesting way of helping me. We had just gotten our samples from our formulator. Although we already knew our products are suitable for all skin types, especially sensitive skin, nothing beat seeing the results myself on my daughter's extra sensitive skin. It felt really good to have this major milestone checked!
